Will File Restore Professional work on all models of iPod?
File Restore supports all models and generations of iPod including iPod classic, iPod Nano, iPod mini, iPod shuffle, iPod touch. To verify that your particular iPod can be detected by File Restore, connect it to your computer using the USB port and start File Restore. The device should be listed under “Removable Drives” in the Drive drop-down list. If the drive letter is not available, review the “Physical Drives” and select the appropriate drive number.

How do I get my recovered music files back on to my iPod?
The first thing you must do is to put your files back into iTunes.

Method 1:
Open iTunes and click File in the top left hand corner.
Now click "Import" and select the folder where your recovered files are located.
You can now import the files into iTunes.

Method 2:
With this method you simply open the folder where you have saved your recovered files and "Drag" the files back into your iTunes music library.

Do NOT worry if you do not recognise the recovered file names. Apple uses a proprietary file naming system and the file names will change back to their correct names once the files have been moved back to iTunes.

The next step is to move your music files from iTunes back to your iPod. You do this as follows:

Method 1:
If your iPod is set to auto sync with iTunes
then when you reconnect your iPod to your computer, iTunes will automatically recognise your iPod and automatically move all the files back onto your iPod.
You have now completed the process.

Method 2:
If iTunes is not set to auto sync then you do the following:

Open iTunes and click File.
Click Sync "NAME iPod" and this will move all your files back onto your iPod.
You have now completed the process.

Will File Restore Professional fix corrupted music files on my iPod?
File Restore will recover all available data that is on your iPod. File Restore will not, however, fix corrupted files.

I get a media file preview screen telling me to download and install a media file codec. What is this and why do I need it?
A codec is a small “compression-decompression” program which allows you to watch videos or listen to music of a specific format. File Restore will automatically preview most media file types. However, as there are many different multimedia formats there will be instances where a valid codec is not currently installed on your computer. If a valid codec is not installed then you will be prompted to download and install a codec pack. Once the codec pack is installed you will be able to preview the deleted or lost media file.

What file types will the codec pack enable File Restore to preview?
File Restore will automatically preview most audio and video file types. If, however, a valid codec is not currently installed then the Codec pack will enable File Restore to play previews for the following multimedia file types:
3GP, AAC, AC3, APE, AVI, DivX, 3ivx, DAT, h.264, x264, AVC, Nero Digital, DTS, FLV, FLAC, HD-MOV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, M4A, MPC, MP3, MP4, MO3, MOD, MKV/MKA, MTM, OFR, TTA, OGG/OGM, S3M, Vorbis, VOB, WavPack, ATRAC3, XviD, XM, WV, UMX and many more video and audio file types.

I have installed the codec pack but the file preview now says that the file may be corrupted or no valid media codec is available. Is the file still recoverable?
File previews have a maximum file size of 20MB for certain file types. If the file size is greater than this, the file may not preview. If no valid codec is available, or the file is corrupted, the file will not preview. If no preview is available, it is recommended that the text preview is reviewed for recognisable data. The file condition status will also help to determine the potential for a successful recovery.

My audio or video file preview stops before the end. Will File Restore recover the entire file?
Yes. File Restore will only preview the first 20MB of an audio or video media file type. The entire audio or video file will, however, be recoverable.

Why do I get a media file preview telling me that a file is protected by iTunes Digital Rights Management?
If a file has been purchased from the Apple iTunes store then it is protected by Apple’s Digital Rights Management. iTunes purchased files can only be played by Apple media players.

Why does my iPod not appear on the File Restore Professional drive list?
If the iPod device does not appear in the Drive drop-down list, close File Restore, unplug the device from the USB port and reconnect it ensuring all connections are securely made in all places and then restart File Restore.
If the iPod still does not appear in the drive list, you may need to manually configure your iPod as a drive. Visit the PC Recovery web site for further details on configuring your iPod as a drive.

I synchronised iTunes with my iPod and it has overwritten my files. Will File Restore Professional recover my files?
All files that have not been overwritten (by newly created files) will be recoverable. A number of factors, for example, where the synchronization process decided to write the new data, how much free space was available and how much new data was written, will determine whether or not all previous data is recoverable. Running a File Restore scan on the iPod drive will show what files are still visible and in what condition they are.

I have a folder and exclamation point on my iPod screen. Will File Restore Professional recover my iPod files?
File Restore will recover files from an iPod that displays a folder with an exclamation point etc. Disable iTunes and connect your iPod to your computer. Your iPod should be visible in the File Restore Drive dropdown list. Select your iPod and select your Scan type.

I have a "sad face" icon on my iPod screen. Will File Restore Professional recover my iPod files?
If an iPod displays a “sad face” icon, it indicates that there may be mechanical failure. If the iPod is visible to File Restore then the iPod data may still be recoverable. If it is not visible, then visit the PC Recovery web site for further information.
